The induction and institution of Fr Peter Langdon Davis as the new priest at the Parish Church of St Thomas, Apostle and Martyr, in Somercotes took place at St Thomas’s Church last month, on the old Feast Day of St Thomas.
The institution was performed by the Rt Rev Jonathan Baker, Bishop of Ebbsfleet, and the induction by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield, the Rev Christine Wilson.
The service began with churchwarden Rachel Watson escorting the bishop to the chair, then the hymn The Church’s One Foundation was sung.
The churchwarden led the new priest to the bishop who welcomed Fr Peter and admitted him to the office of priest. Fr Peter then swore an Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen. The hymn Love Divine All Loves Excelling was sung followed by I, the Lord of sea and sky.
Amongst the congregation was local MP Nigel Mills together with Cllrs Paul Smith, Brian Lyttle and John McCabe from the parish council and parish council secretary Glynis Kenney. The Mayor of Amber Valley, Ron Ashton, was accompanied by his consort Nancy Ashton.
The new priest announced the forthcoming services and then led the prayers of intercession. During the singing of the last hymn O come, O come, Emmanuel a collection was taken for the parish Scouting organisations.
Fr Peter spoke well of Fr Theo Holmes who held the church together for two years during the interregnum and asked the congregration to remember Fr Theo in their daily prayers.
Regular Eucharists, services with Holy Communion, will now be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10am and a Solemn Eucharist on Sundays at 9.30am. Special services on other Holy Days will be as announced.
