Joe Heathcote, Clerk to Somercotes Parish Council, retires at the end of September, during his 50thyear in local government.
Joe was first a member of Alfreton Urban District Council in 1961, and became Chairman in 1968.
He was elected as a member for Somercotes in the County Council in 1964, a position he held until he retired in 1993.
Joe was Chairman of Derbyshire County Council from 1991 until 1993.
He became Clerk of Somercotes Parish Council on a temporary basis following the resignation of the Clerk in 1993!
One of Joe’s most vivid recollections during his 50 years was of the Parish Council taking over and renovating the St. Thomas Centre in 1996, which is now Somercotes Parish Hall and is used by many local organisations for varying activities, and remembers that there was a great deal of work involved in the renovation
Joe met many well-know people during his 50 years, including the Queen, Princess Diana, the Duke of Gloucesterand Robert Maxwell. One person he met who he admired greatly was Dr Konrad Adenauer, Chancellor of the FederalRepublicof Germanyfrom 1949 to 1963.
