On Tuesday evening Mr NEWHAM the Ventriloquist gave an entertainment in the National School. There was not a large attendance.
1916 Aug 11th
A Rose Show was held at the Rifle Volunteer on Saturday with 28 entries and some very excellent blooms were staged. The winners were: 1st J TAYLOR, 2nd E SPENCER, 3RD A SELWYN
1921 Feb 4th
Riddings and Somercotes HOCKEY CLUB had a good game against LOUGHBOROUGH on Somercotes cricket ground on Saturday and won 6 goals to 2. J AMOS Captain scored 4, J WADDOUPS & S GREAVES scored the others.
1926 Aug 27th
Mr GEORGE BEASTALL gave all the staff of the Premier Electric Theatre and Oporto House their annual outing to Wensley on Sunday. The company numbering 40 went by CHARABANC and spent a most enjoyable time.
1930 Feb 14th
Last Friday employees of Messrs GEORGE EDWARDS & SONS Hosier Manufacturers & members of EDWARDS Welfare made merry at the opening of the new Dance Hall on Somercotes Hill. The MC’s were Mr E A HILL & Mr T JONES
1934 May 10th
FLETCHERS BILLIARD HALL Somercotes was crowded on Wednesday evening last week to witness exhibition games of BILLIARDS & SNOOKER between Miss RUTH HARRISON the British Ladies Champion and the pick of the local players. The audience was delighted with Miss HARRISON but the local gentlemen cuests proved superior. Mr G SHEPHERD winning 200-192 & Mr J DAWES 200-180.
1936 Feb 21st
About 70 people attended a FANCY DRESS PARTY organised by the YOUNG MENS FELLOWSHIP at the Wesley Church on Saturday. There were about 40 entries and the MC’s were Mr W LEE and Mr S LATHWELL. Awards were Mr IS LATHWELL (Indian Rajah) Mr E MANTON (Rustic), Mr E HILL jun (Chinese), Miss VERA POYSER (early 90s), Miss L LATHWELL (The Pink Lady), Mrs E MANTON (African Lady).
1936 May 22nd
SOMERCOTES TOREADORS CARNIVAL BAND organised a parade and field day on Saturday last. The display was in the field adjoining the Rifle Volunteer Inn kindly lent by Mr WEIGHTMAN (Licensee). At 10pm there was a grand torchlight tattoo.
1936 Sep 11th
A HEATHER FAIR was a very profitable effort on Saturday at Birchwood Methodist Church. The schoolroom was tastefully decorated with HEATHER and sprigs were wold which helped considerably to swell the funds. There was fancy dress for the children, a Treasure Hunt was won by Mt J GENT Ladies ANKLE completion Miss DURHAM, Gents ANKLE competition Mr G NAYLOR
1936 Oct 23rd
Mr & Mrs BERNARD CLARKSON of Lower Somercotes have been very successful at various events during the summer with their baby boy BARRY who is 18 months old. He has taken prizes at Somercotes NURSING ASSOCIATION GARDEN Fete. His latest was to win a Silver Trophy at the GREAT BABY SHOW at CRYSTAL PALACE.

St Thomas’s Senior and Junior Guild invited friends to the NEW YEAR PARTY last Thursday at the Church Hall. Games and Dancing were enjoyed to the RADIOGRAM and Supper was served by Mrs E BRENTNALL, the Misses IRIS & FREDA BRENTNALL & Mrs W CFATER. THE ELIMINATION WALTZ was won by BRYN O’CALLAGHAN & MAISIE CHALLIS
