You all know Tarlton’s Shop on Nottingham Road, but did you know that it was founded by Arthur Tarlton, great uncle of the present owner, Edith, in 1902. Did you also know that his nephew, also named Arthur, made the cycling shoes for the bronze medal- winning British cycling team, three of them the Wyld Brothers from Alfreton, and also Monty Southall from London, at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam?
Mr Tarlton used to run the cycling training club at Somercotes School. He gave a cup for the best cyclist in memory of his son, Bert, who was killed in an accident while working for the Electricity Board. The family doesn’t know when the cup was presented for the last time, but think it may have been in the 1950’s. They would like to know if anyone has any information or if someone received the cup, or even still has it. It was a small cup, bought at the time from Edgar White’s, Jewellers, now Jenkinsons.
